DAMC-X2TIMER

Board Description

The DAMC-X2TIMER is a MicroTCA.4 module developed at DESY to provide high-precision pico-second-precise timing and synchronization for Low Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) control systems. It plays a central role in distributing reference signals and timing events within large accelerator facilities, wherestable and deterministic synchronization is essential for beam quality.

As a double-width AMC with RTM support, the DAMC-X2TIMER integrates into the MTCA.4 standard, enabling reliable operation in modern modular control infrastructures. It receives the facility’s master clock and event information, then generates and distributes phase-aligned clocks, triggers, and time stamps to other AMC modules inside the crate. In this way, it ensures that all LLRF components operate coherently with the accelerator’s global timing system.

Key features

  • Distribution of low-jitter reference clocks and triggers.
  • Support for deterministic latency across multiple channels.
  • Integration with DESY’s timing network and event system.
  • Compatibility with MTCA.4 crates and rear transition modules (RTMs). The DAMC-X2TIMER is part of the broader MTCA-based LLRF ecosystem at DESY, which underpins projects such as the European XFEL and FLASH free-electron laser. By providing stable synchronization with sub-picosecond precision, it enables the accurate control of accelerating fields, directly impacting beam stability and facility performance.
